Sarah, Lady Tetley Hall

Tatler travel articleA descendant of the Tetley tea family, Sarah trained as a jewelery designer, but that went out of the window when, on a trip to France, she spied a 15th century chateau in the Dordogne. She bought it with her now ex-husband, property tycoon Sir Ernest Hall, in 2003, and then set about a daunting renovation project. Seven year later, the doors have been flung open

Why France?
I have always loved exploring the French countryside and have early memories of the Loire valley - romantic, timeless, peaceful and serene, with pastoral views and delicious food and wines.

What made you decide to open a hotel?
I am very much a Yorkshire lady but I moved permantly to Chateau D'Arnac in 2006. Having fallen in love with it, I wanted to restore it the best I could. Once I'd done so, I began to count the cost, which was considerable. I needed to generate some revenue - and starting a boutique hotel seemed the obvious thing to do.

Your favourite hotels?
Usually small, family-run places, such as the Sacher hotels in Vienna and Salzburg.

Your inspirations?
There's a slightly anglicised approach, using some of the antique furniture and portraits I brought from my house in Yorkshire. I was inspired by the fact that this part of France was in effect part of England up until the 13th century. The Gatehouse of the chateau is very me, I think - it's a romantic and tranquil part of the property, while at the same time fun and practical to stay in.

What kind of place do you want Chateau D'Arnac to be?
A refuge. An informal country-house atmosphere is important, and it must be a place to get away from all the stresses and strains of the world, where guests can relax, reflect and enjoy themselves.

What do you miss about England?
I don't miss England as much as I thought I would. I miss friends and family, but with transport links being so good these days they often come and see me.

What do you miss when you are away from the chateau?
The lovely stream, the Menoire, that runs right under my bedroom window. It comes down from the hills and even in summer it makes an enchanting babbling sound, which is a pleasure to wake up to.

What do you wish you'd known from the start?
That in rural France things can take a long time to happen!

What should every hotelier's mantra be?
Ich dien (I serve)
